WELCOME TO TENPUDO

Since we opened in 1984 it has been our company policy to specialise in 'tailor made' Bogu at competitive prices.

The reason we strictly adhere to this policy, is that every customer has individual needs due to their different body shape and size, which could result in 'ill fitting' Bogu if it were not custom made, it could also limit the technical improvement of their Kendo and in fact could cause discomfort, even pain. At Tenpudo we strive to avoid such issues whilst ensuring value for money.

Our after sales services is quite simply 'second to none' and our Bogu repair Department whilst dealing mainly with Kote repairs will undertake a variety of repairs according to our customers needs.

We introduced the shop's trade mark brand 'Hotaru Bogu series' in 2002 and since that time we have strived to provide even better customer care, including a maintenance advice service, which is a small part of what we have on offer to all of our clients. Our guarantee is to offer strictly traditional kendo equipment that is made in Japan and to offer it at competitive prices, especially as Bogu manufacture in foreign countries is becoming more and more popular.

In 2008 our Kendo Equipment Gallery ‘the chamber of space and time’ was opened within the interior of our shop. In the gallery we display Shinai and Bogu used by ‘Famous’ high ranking Kendo exponents from the past & the present, including Hanshi 9th dans: Matsujiro Matsui, Kiyoshi Nakakura, Yasunori Taniguchi, and Hanshi 8th dans: Sadafumi Takuma, Masashi Chiba, Masatake Sumi and others. Here visitors can closely examine and study their individual Bogu style and the relationship of this style to their kendo, in great depth..

I started Kendo when I was 11 years old. I wasn’t particularly strong or skillful but I continued to practice Kendo up until today, mostly because of my teacher’s humanity, who also taught me the concept of aesthetic beauty.

I believe that Kendo teaches some important elements which are useful in our every day life. What we learn in Kendo studies shall become the foundation of our life.

I believe that if one decides to make the first step to enter the learning of the way of the sword, the gate is always open at any point of his or her life.

SENGAI

It would involve a great complexity when one tries to explain 'enlightenment' in buddhism therefore it is often the case that symbols are used instead of words. It is so colled 'Sen-ga' the zen picture or the 'silent poetry' Sengai, a monk of the Rinzai school of Buddhism painted lots og zen-ga and preferred tp use simple forms. In his famous quotation he stated 'the mind is neither of or or ' There are no explanations given as to what he meant by this. One theory tells us that he attempted to categorise an entire existence in the world through three different symbols and in doing so he depicted the universe. However there are also a few other theories that exist.
